Isaac Asimov published his first robot story in 1940. He introduced the Three Laws of Robotics in 1942. His I, Robot collection, which established much of the language and framework through which the twentieth century thought about artificial servants, appeared in 1950.
Elizabeth W. Bellamy published “Ely’s Automatic Housemaid” in 1899.
Forty-one years before Asimov’s robots, a woman writing for a popular fiction magazine had already worked through the essential problems: the machine that does exactly what it’s told but not what you meant, the chaos of the first deployment, the difficulty of shutting the thing down once it’s running, the human tendency to anthropomorphize a mechanical servant until its dumbness becomes more unsettling than its malfunction, and the inventor who arrives after the damage, full of enthusiasm, to explain that what everyone experienced as catastrophic failure was actually a surplus of mental energy and a question of lubrication.
This is a robot story. It’s also a comedy. In 1899, those two things fit together so naturally that Bellamy apparently didn’t think it needed remarking upon.
The Household Problem as the Original AI Problem
The domestic servant problem that opens the story — the narrator’s family cycling through ten cooks in three months, each more inadequate than the last, the household in a constant state of minor crisis — is the story’s inciting condition, and it’s doing something specific.
The desire for a reliable, tireless, affordable household servant who does exactly what you ask and never complains is one of the oldest technological fantasies in human history. It’s the fantasy that produced, at various points: the golem, the automaton, the mechanical Turk, the domestic robot, and eventually the Roomba. Bellamy’s story appears at the exact historical moment when mechanization had made enough things possible — electric batteries, clock mechanisms, early automation — that the fantasy was starting to feel plausibly realizable, and her narrator’s immediate credulity when Harrison Ely’s circular arrives is not presented as foolishness. It’s presented as the entirely understandable response of a man who has been eating greasy omelettes and turbid coffee for three months and has been promised a machine that can’t quit.
What Bellamy understands, with the dry precision of someone who actually runs a household, is that the problem isn’t the servant. The problem is the gap between instruction and intention — between what you tell someone to do and what you actually need done. Every domestic catastrophe in the story flows from this gap. The beds get made perfectly and remade six more times because nobody told the machine to stop at one. The cook stirs an empty pan with mechanical zeal because the boy connected the battery before adding ingredients. The Juliana sweeps because she was set to sweep, and keeps sweeping past the point of utility, because “stop” is not a concept the machine contains.
Asimov spent decades writing about exactly this problem. Bellamy put it in a comedy for a popular magazine forty years earlier.
The Fight for the Broom
The story’s centerpiece — the two automatons locked in combat over the broom, spinning around the entry hall, destroying the hat-rack and the rubber plant and both stained-glass panels in the front door while the family watches in horror — is the moment where Bellamy’s comedy tips into something that, read now, lands differently.
The machines are fighting because each has been set to a task that requires the broom, and neither has a mechanism for negotiating conflict or deferring to the other. They are, in the story’s terms, possessed by a surplus of mental energy and an uncontrollable sweeping impulse that has nowhere to resolve. The resolution is not rational. It’s not communicative. It’s physical, loud, and destructive, and it ends only because the clock runs out.
Bellamy describes their faces during the fight with what might be the story’s sharpest observation: resolute, inexorable, calm, as though each was sustained in the contest by a lofty sense of duty. The horror of the scene is not that the machines are angry. It’s that they’re not. They are pursuing their programmed objectives with complete indifference to the wreckage they’re producing, because wreckage is not a variable their programming contains. They cannot be reasoned with. They cannot be shamed. They cannot be distracted. They can only be waited out.
This is the same problem Asimov’s robots would face when their laws came into conflict — when two directives issued simultaneously produced an irresolvable logical standoff. Bellamy got there first, and she did it with a broom.
Harrison Ely’s Diagnosis
The inventor arriving after the damage to explain that everything was actually fine, really, just a question of tuning, is a character type that has not aged a day in a hundred and twenty-five years.
Harrison Ely examines the machines like a physician examining patients, clears his brow, gives a little puff of satisfaction, and announces: surplus mental energy, improper lubrication, a compensator is all that’s needed, ship them back and they’ll be right as rain. He is, clearly, not wrong in any technical sense — the machines did work, and the problems were real engineering problems with real engineering solutions. He is also cheerfully blind to the experience of the people who lived through the deployment, which is a different kind of problem that the prospectus of the syndicate being promoted to manufacture his automatic housemaid will presumably also not address.
This is the technology optimist’s perennial blind spot, rendered in miniature: the gap between what the invention does and what the people using it experience. Ely solved the engineering problem. He did not solve the household problem. The narrator is still waiting for the oblong packing case, still confidently expecting the Domestic Fairies to return any day now.
The reader is not as confident.
Anna Maria
One more thing worth noting before we go: Anna Maria, the narrator’s wife, is right about everything.
She is skeptical of the machines from the first “Oh!” She administers bread and butter to the children before the demonstration begins, because she is a practical woman and doesn’t trust her breakfast to an invention. She oils the machines when they flag, correctly follows the instructions, and correctly reports the result. She is the one who keeps the family fed throughout both catastrophes. When her husband tells her the thing is only a machine, she retorts “I’m not so sure about that!” — and the story, which has just spent several pages describing machines that behave with uncanny single-mindedness and go to battle with a lofty sense of duty, implicitly agrees with her.
She is worth, as the narrator himself admits, a thousand Beneficent Geniuses. The story knows this. The narrator knows this. Harrison Ely does not appear to have considered it at any point in his design process.
That, too, has not changed in a hundred and twenty-five years.
